In summary, the Heterosexist Guided imagery offers a transformative learning approach that
can bring students closer to understanding what it is like to be a minority in today’s society.
The introductory sociology classroom is an ideal setting for implementing the heterosexist
guided imagery because the goals of such a course should be to increase awareness of
social problems and to think sociologically about them. In addition, even after the sociology
course is over, it remains important that individuals are able to make the link between how
their individually-held beliefs reinforce social institutions and how important it is to be able
to understand the origins of both individuals and the socio-historical context in which they
live. Ideally, the experience will inspire them to change their ways of thinking and affect
their behavior towards “others.”
