A research problem that is not easily solved is the evaluation of change in the way
students think. The term “Habits of Mind” truly describes where the change takes
place. As a result, it is difficult to see the amount of change in the students and
difficult to determine the degree to which new thought processes are transferred
from the classroom to the playground and the home.
Another problem that became apparent as we proceeded through the project was
the need for more than one month to truly incorporate a particular habit into the
curriculum and then into the minds of our students. The learning circles
developed many ideas on how to use the habits in the classroom, but staff were
unable to use all their ideas because of the time frame. We also found that
during the busy months of December and March, it was virtually impossible to
complete the concept attainment of the habit of the month.
