When adaptive behaviors develop poorly, children with autism may:(a) refuse to accept changes in their food, clothing, or schedules; (b) fixate on everyday skills like repetitively brushing their teeth or washing their hands; (c) engage in repetitive behaviors such as assembling toys or other items, making peculiar sounds, or waving their arms; or (d) respond inappropriately to noise, light, or human contact (Akshoomoff & Stahmer, 2006).
