During the Enlightenment, M. Yalom

During the Enlightenment, M. Yalom contends, "breasts became the
battleground for controversial theories about the human race and
political systems. Before the century was over, the breast would be
linked, as never before, to the very idea of nationhood"(Yalom). This idea
came to manifest itself in both literature and art. Jean-Jacques
Rousseau forges a new identity for women in his novel Emilie. He
suggests that there is no question about a woman's duty: it is to nurse
her child as morality flows from a woman's breast (Rousseau. 45-6).24
