At the end of the imagery exercise, students were asked to fill out a discussion
worksheet with the following questions. (1) What emotions did you feel during and after
the exercise? (2) What images did you see or hear that made you feel this way? (3) What is
sociological about this exercise? Once they completed their worksheets, they were asked to
form small groups with nearby classmates to discuss their answers. In total, the presentation
of the image lasted about 10 minutes, and the small group segment lasted 10–15 minutes.
Then the professor led a full class discussion over each of the answers, seeking out each
group’s thoughts and discussion points. First, the instructor asked students to summarize
their answers to the class, which opened the discussion and helped the instructor gauge
comfort level. As students began participating, the instructor guided discussion towards the
open-ended questions that allowed students to share feelings and reactions to the exercise.
Throughout the discussion, the licensed counselor paid attention to body language to ensure
that a normal comfort level was maintained and that students did not appear distressed or
overly anxious. Finally, as discussion dwindled, students were reminded of the resources
available to them, such as speaking with the faculty members individually, meeting with the
licensed counselor available, or visiting campus or community resources. Students received
full credit for participation for the day via an attendance sheet, regardless of whether or not
they chose to contribute to the discussion
