To achieve effectiveness in communication, translation must not only be capable of bridging the gap between languages but between cultures as well. When the target culture lacks a given element, its language will normally lack an expression for it. It is the translator’s task to find an expression in the target language that will convey the missing element to speakers of that language (Ivir, 1987). Faced with this task, the translator will have a number of possible procedures; to select the appropriate one, various parameters need to be taken into account.
