In June the teachers at Queen Elizabeth School reflected on how their teaching wasaffected by our Habits of Mind project. A lot of feedback was provided, and afterreviewing the teacher reflection sheets, we found that similarities emerged in theteachers’ experiences with the project. Many teachers reported that they foundthemselves focused more on developing students with thinking skills than ongetting through the curriculum. They recognized that although teachers sometimesget caught up in the desire to get everything done, the project allowed them timeto step back and place emphasis on the process of learning as intelligentbehaviors were developed within the students. Teachers observed that they weremaking better use of “teachable moments” by drawing upon the school-widevocabulary generated by the Habits of Mind. Questioning techniques and studentreflection were more widely practised throughout the school. It also becameclear that many teachers themselves engaged in more metacognitive thinking asthey looked at how well they modeled the specific Habits of Mind in their everydayinteractions with the students.
