There are close analogies between teacher–student and doctor–patient communication, and the principles for giving clear explanationsapply, namely: check understanding before, during andafter the explanation; provide information in ‘bite-size chunks’;summarise periodically and at the end (better still, ask one ofthe learners to summarise); highlight take-home messages; finally,invite questions. If in doubt, pitch things at a low level and workupwards.
