meares-Irlen syndrome (MIS) is a condition defined as the inability to see comfortably due to visual perceptual distortions (Hollis et al, 2007). This leads to difficulty with fine vision tasks and sufferers describe reading difficulties with text appearing to move on the page. It also can include text blurring, bending, flashing, blobs, flickering or shimmering (Evans and Joseph, 2002). Other indicators include eye strain and headaches from prolonged exposure to text. The condition is also known as visual stress (asthenopia) and scotopic sensitivity syndrome (SSS).
