Many Sayyids were killed during the civil war (1962–70), and their properties were confiscated. A few Sayyid families today continue to play a political role in Yemen. For example, the al-Mut¬awakkil, al-Mu’ayyad, and al-Jafri families were recruited under the former North Yemen and South Yemen to fill ministerial and diplomatic posts. During the civil war, these families sided with the republican forces. The Sayyids of south Yemen were well represented in the Hadra¬mawati diaspora in Southeast Asia. One member of a Hadrami Sayyid family in Indonesia, the al-Attas, served as Indonesia’s foreign minister.
