The purpose of this investigation was (a) to examine how a teacher
went about having students consider habits of mind, (b) to examine whether
fifth grade students displayed evidence of consideration of habits of mind,
and (c) to examine whether students could self-assess their use of habits of
mind. The Dimensions of Learning model was the source used to define
habits of mind because little research was available that studied a habits of
mind construct. Of the available research, even less was sufficiently detailed
to inform practitioners. This study was designed to fill in some of the gaps in
research. Was the Dimensions of Learning construct an effective model for
teachers and students? Could a teacher use the model to introduce and
