Many misconceptions still exist about written assessment, despitebeing disproved repeatedly by scientific studies. Probably, themost important misconception is the belief that the format of thequestion plays an important role in determining what the questionactually tests. Multiple-choice questions, for example, are oftenbelieved to be unsuitable for testing medical problem-solving. Thereasoning behind this assumption is that all a student has to doin a multiple-choice question is to recognise the correct answer,whereas, in an open-ended question he/she has to generate theanswer spontaneously. However, research has repeatedly shownthat the question’s format is of limited importance and that it isthe content of the question that determines almost totally what thequestion tests
