The breeding programmes require stronger and more effective selection, in order to find the strongest and most suitable breed. To improve efficiency and fulfil financial challenges, the breeding program should be able to deliver off season-ova (juveniles) to hatcheries over the whole year. It requires investments and expertise in managing light and temperature and recirculation of both fresh and sea water. The future challenges will be to increase the size of the smolt, to reduce the time in sea and to reduce the risk of diseases and mortality in the cages.
