The current design and construction practicesin Russia, especially for such an important andunique project as the 2018 FIFA World Cup, largelycorrespond to the best sustainable constructionpractices and international standards.However, in order to ensure the highestenvironmental performance of the stadiums and tomeet the sustainable development goals, specialobligations have been taken for the preparationstage and during the 2018 FIFA World Cup matchesto ensure compliance with FIFA’s certifi cationrequirements for green building.Green building compliance covers sustainabledevelopment aspects, such as the introductionof energy and resource effi cient technologies,minimising the negative environmental and socialimpact, conservation of biodiversity, ensuring theaccessibility of buildings for people with limitedmobility as well as providing a safe and comfortableenvironment for building users.Certifi cation of the 2018 FIFA World Cup stadiumsallows for the improvement and disseminationin Russia of the cutting-edge experience of theinternational architectural, construction and facilitiesmanagement communities, leaving a legacy ofskills, knowledge and practical examples of the wideimplementation of sustainable development principles.This report prepared by the Russian Green BuildingCouncil (RuGBC) describes the principal greenbuilding approaches applied during the design andconstruction of the 2018 FIFA World Cup stadiums inRussia during 2014 and 2015.
