Box 15.5 outlines the most common methods used to assess professionalism.
Four points require emphasis. In the first place, the
definition chosen, along with the attributes of the professional,
should dictate what is being assessed. Second, the learner’s knowledge
of the nature of contemporary professionalism should be
evaluated using robust methods including written examinations,
MCQ’s and so on. Third, the performance of the learners, including
observed professional or unprofessional behaviour, should be evaluated
using multiple evaluators and multiple techniques to ensure
greater reliability. Finally, the professionalism of faculty members
must also be evaluated in order to ensure that the learning environment
supports rather than subverts the teaching of professionalism
