According to The Associated Press, around 100 bearded men shouting “God is great!” smashed the windows of Cinema Afrique, where the movie “Neither God nor master” by France-based Tunisian director Nadia Feni was playing on Sunday.
Tunisia, previously a staunch secularism has disallowed women from donning the hijab, an ultraconservative comeback as such is scary.
But how to inspire such ultraconservative Islamists that it is the freedom of speech and expression that allows Ms. Feni to showcase her movie?
It needs far more inspiration to come to the fore beyond al-Azhar and Muslim Brotherhood splinter groups being different. It needs more of modern day Akbar’s genius.
But then again, reaching modernity is not exclusive to the Muslims
