Poorly mastered adaptive behaviors, especially in the areas of daily living skills, communication, and socialization, can contribute to behavior problems for children with autism (Dyches, Wilder, Sudweeks, Obiakor, & Algozzine, 2004). Health care providers and other professionals stress that mastery of adaptive behaviors by children with autism is positively associated with the children becoming adults who require less supervision (Carothers & Taylor, 2004).
