Task 5 – Summarizing reading and listening


You have decided your topic for the Report and presentation.

Choose 3 texts to read which follow the theme for your report. The texts should be relevant and not too long – no more than 2 pages each.

Choose 3 videos to listen to.

Make a clear plan of what you will read or listen to and summarize each week. Post the plan on your blog.

Each week you should post a summary of NOT less than 100 words about what you have read and/or listened to.In the end you will have six summaries (one for each of the three texts and one for each of the three videos).

Take a look at how to summarize here and here and look at an example of a good summary here. When I grade the summaries I will use this grading rubric Summary grading rubric, so you should look at this BEFORE you start writing, and don’t forget if there is anything you are not sure about ASK ME!



Please remember I will be asking you to SUMMARISE what you have read on the course as well as EXPLAIN some of the course concepts VERBALLY and in WRITTEN form :)

You will use these summaries to help you write your report.

Make a post and call it Summaries and Writing. You can keep your summaries here and use them to help you write the report.

Now you can try your first summary of NOT LESS than 100 words. Follow the advice from the links above and summarise the first text you have found. Choose a text which is not too long – about one page is good (or longer if you can read more).



You should clearly label your summary as Summary 1 and include a link to the original course material you are summarizing.



Task 6 Report

Introduction, at least 3 paragraphs and Conclusion.

Title page with title, your name and student ID and Class GCD 2022 and group NDC.

Citations in the text and a Reference List at the end.

The Reference List is is a list of references (APA) to texts and video (sites) you used and cited in your text.



Task 7 – Giving feedback

Giving constructive peer feedback has been proven to be one of the keys to successful learning. In this course you will give feedback to each other to help your classmates and just as importantly help yourselves. Start with looking at this example of how constructive feedback with even very young children can be a powerful learning tool and NOTE HOW the teacher shows the students how to give feedback.

Now you should read two of your classmates’ summaries. When you have read their summary you should post some comments that can include:
•How well did the summary capture the main idea?
•Did it provide enough supporting details?
•Was the summary written in clear English?
•What technical vocabulary did the summary use and how accurately was this used.



When you have finished your comments you should also post them in your own blog with a link to the classmates’ blogs you are commenting on.



Task 8 Presentation

Use the notes for your report to prepare a short talk of about five minutes.

Make slides or short films to help the audience.



Task 9 Reading texts, Questions, Writing and Quizzes


You will have 4 quizzes throughout the course approximately one every 2 weeks. Each of these quizzes will receive a grade which will be grouped together to make up 20% of the total course grade under “Quizzes”.Each quiz has a reading text and an opinion essay. These will prepare you for the Final Exam (30%).
