in the case of poorly performing trainee a direct observation method may identify aproblem that needs to be further assessed with another tool suchas a cognitive test of knowledge. Moreover, differences in therelative difficulty of cases used in assessing a group of equivalentlyexperienced trainees can also lead to errors of measurement. Thisproblem can be partially addressed through careful selection ofcases and attention to the level of difficulty for each trainee. It isalso true that assessors themselves may rate cases as more or lesscomplex, depending on their level of expertise with such cases intheir own practice. Thus it is essential with all of these measures tousemultiple observations as a single observation is a poor predictorof a doctor’s performance in other settings with other cases
