In Japan the group always comes before the individual (Alston 1989:165). In the eyes of theJapanese, a task’s complexity cannot be resolved through an individual’s decision. This is alsomanifested in Japanese communication and decision-making processes. Decisions are made ina group setting. Even though the group leader is the one who ultimately decides, a group’smembers are expected to accept the decision as their own.
