Next, learn to reverse-engineer the process. What techniques did the art director use to communicate the idea? Why? Look closely at the page layout, typography and visual style. Don't steal ideas, but don't be afraid of imitation, either, at this stage of your career. That is how most artists learn.
Finally, find a talented mentor who can show you the ropes. Sit behind them while they work their magic and learn.
Above all, follow your heart and not your wallet. If art direction is truly what interests you then, by all means, give it all you've got. But if you're a designer at heart, don't try to fit into someone else's notion of what it takes to advance your career. Just be the best designer you can be. If design isn't valued at your company, then your best hope of advancement may be to find a company that does understand and appreciate its value.
