Community involvement is therefore very important to the ensure that strategy implementation and management is also an empowering practice. Jan Smithies and Georgina Webster (1998, p.94) provide a case study example of community involvement in the Hutson Street Health Project in Bradford, England. The Project covered a deprived inner-city area and was established to work on community health through a number of inter-connecting ways, such as establishing networks and group activities. An evaluation of the Project found that community involvement was promoted through ‘word of mouth’ rather than through official channels.
