Exercise
You are working on a temporary secondment overseas in a prison that is new to you. Three newly admitted prisoners who are charged with terrorist offences have been brought as emergencies to the prison hospital. Each has attempted suicide by taking a lethal substance. A note left by one for relatives indicates that they have chosen to die rather than risk giving away information about their comrades under interrogation. It seems clear that they would not wish to be resuscitated because they fear being tortured during interrogation and they expect to be executed by the State anyway. The prison governor says they must be revived and questioned. He says that their advance refusal of resuscitation was not valid because they were under a misapprehension that they would be ill-treated and only one has left a note. He says that they were probably pressured by their organisation to use suicide pills in the event of capture. You suspect, however, that ill-treatment of prisoners does occur although you have not yet seen clear evidence of this.
