The many variations of research design are intended to maximize internal and external validity, which Campbell and Stanley (1963) defined as the basic requirements for an experiment to be interpretable. Internal validity addresses the question, Did the experiment and the experiment alone make a difference? External validity addresses the question of generalizability: To whom and to what contexts can we generalize these findings? The major threats to internal validity are these:
