The role of the media in exposing abuse
The role of the media in exposing abuse
Television and the printed media have helped expose abuses in a number of countries. However, doctors should think carefully about approaching the media about abuses which they have witnessed. In particular you should ensure that you can answer the following questions:
Have you exhausted complaint mechanisms within the prison system? (Or do you judge it to be too dangerous to raise alleged abuses with prison management?)
Do you have grounds to believe that attempts you have previously made have been unfairly dealt with?
Have you approached other possible interlocutors such as an ombudsman or parliamentarian?
Have you consulted your professional association?
Will there be negative repercussions for the prisoner of public protest?
Will the outcome prevent you from protecting prisoners in the future?
In summary, press reporting can play an important role in the exposure of human rights violations but it can also cause problems for the individual doctor who may be seen as failing to maintain good faith with the prison authorities.
