MAJOR ECONOMIC SOCIAL WELFARE PROGRAMS
TIED TO ECONOMIC CONDITIONS
Economic policies are not always viewed as part of our social welfare system, and some social welfare programs are regarded as outside the domain of economics. The following programs, which are directly based on individual and social eco-nomic conditions, are integral parts of our social welfare system.
UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE
The previous chapter introduced the Unemployment Insurance program. Enacted as part of the 1935 Social Security Act, unemployment insurance was created as a joint program administered by both the federal and state governments. States de-cide the duration of, amount of, and eligibility requirements for benefits and di-rectly administer the program. The federal government provides grants for administration of the program and is responsible for maintaining the Unemploy-ment Insurance Trust Fund.
