verbinden, urn eine neue besondere Wirkung hervorzuheben
(Lessing 1964).
Language cannot present an ugly object in its entirety. Writing reveals an
object piece by piece, through which process the entirety of it is
obscured. Thus, ugliness can be functional and is not a worthless
subject. Its functionality, however, can only be found in poetry.
According to Lessing, ugliness loses its effective power in the written
word and can thus be utilized within a written work of art.
The concept of "Verspottung von Charakteren" that Jung refers to
stems from Aristotelian designations for comedy. In Poetica, Aristotle
determines that ugliness functions as a common motif within comedy,
but he notes that only certain types of ugliness can be of use. "Die
Komodie ist, wie wir sagten, Nachahmung von schlechteren Menschen,
aber nicht im Hinblick auf jede Art von Schlechtigkeit, sondern nur
insoweit, als das Lacherliche am Hafilichen teilhat" (Aristoteles 1994).
Aristotle maintains that the comic, or here the comically ugly, is neither
malicious nor corrupt. The comic is designed to amuse without inspiring
or causing pain. Ugliness becomes a device for what Aristotle considered
a lower form of drama designed to entertain and depict lower classes
(Aristoteles 1994). Lessing, too, describes ugliness, but with an apparent
aversion, not for its being a comic tool but rather for the emotions it
evokes.
