Why Study Here
A quality foundation on the UNSW Kensington campus
UNSW Foundation Studies (UFS) is a program of the University of New South Wales, and all courses are monitored and approved by UNSW Staff and Quality Assurance Committees.
Established in 1988, UNSW Foundation Studies is the longest-running and leading Foundation Program in Australia and is designed specifically for students with an international education background. We are located on the University of New South Wales (UNSW) campus in the beautiful Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.
A guaranteed place
Successful international students have a guaranteed place via a provisional offer to an undergraduate degree at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney. Studies have shown that UNSW Foundation Studies graduates perform better than other international and local students at UNSW. We have a proud record of success with approximately 85% of students gaining entry to university. For some programs, over 90% of students receive an offer to UNSW.
University style activities
Our students attend university style lectures, tutorials, workshops and laboratories that lay the foundations for success at university. Class sizes are small to create a dynamic learning environment while allowing each student to receive the individual attention they require. The UFS curriculum is designed to support the development of tertiary-level academic skills necessary for success at University. Our students receive a well-rounded education through which they further develop their critical thinking and creative problem solving skills, group discussion skills in English, teamwork skills and reflective learning. Students are encouraged to become independent learners who take responsibility for their own learning and academic progress. Our students can receive extra private help and guidance from their teachers through regular consultation tutorials in all subjects.
UFS students also participate in social activities designed to build friendship networks that last beyond their studies and give them greater confidence, both in their formal studies and in participating in the university community.
Through academic and social opportunities graduates of the Program develop:
competence in English required for scholarly enquiry
relevant discipline knowledge required for successful undergraduate study
a capacity for critical thinking and creative problem solving
familiarity with the teaching and learning styles of Australian universities
the skills required for collaborative learning
a sense of independence, ethical behaviour and responsibility for their own actions and learning.
Units of credit
On successful completion of UNSW Foundation Studies, we assist students in applying to the University of New South Wales and other universities.
The quality of the UNSW Foundation Studies graduates and of the UNSW Foundation Studies Design and Physical Science streams is widely recognised. Our students who continue on to study an undergraduate degree at The College of Fine Arts or with the Faculty of Science at UNSW, will receive 6 units of credit towards their studies. This will reduce the cost and possibly the duration of an undergraduate degree for these students.
