The overall purpose of Beyond Words is to enhance the
understanding of human body movement. It is widely
recognized now that words represent only a small proportion
of the total range of human communication. Indeed, what we
cannot speak about is critical, for nonverbal behavior
comprises the very bedrock on which human relationships are
built. Yet almost all formal education focuses solely on the
verbal mode, with the result that even the well-schooled find
themselves ill-prepared to grapple with the dynamic
dimension of human experience. As in all areas of human life
where custom, habit, and ignorance prevail, the lack of
understanding of movement gives rise to many ills - from the
misuse of the body/self caused by faulty functional patterns
to distorted social perceptions arising in large part from
unexamined nonverbal biases. If education is to have an
overall impact on the quality of life, then students' nonverbal
potential snould be nurtured as well as their verbal potential.
