A better definition of peace work?
Based on these arguments, the most valuable definition of peace work should be based on the following definition of peace (see also Lesson 1.1): ‘a capacity to handle conflicts with empathy, creativity and by non-violent means’ (Galtung 2002:8). Using skills and knowledge to act with empathy, creativity and nonviolence for the good of humanity in conflict is peace work.
Peace work can be even more than this. There is also work that reduces structural violence, improves the conditions for our vulnerable nature and environment, reduces the suffering of all living creatures, creates respect for human rights, and builds the foundations of a deeper understanding of human diversity.
