The dichotomy illustrated
On the right, a picture of Bobby Sands, just one example of a hunger striker who starved to death through voluntary total fasting, taking only water.
On the left, a Turkish woman who died during the Turkish hunger strikes. In Turkey, fasting was not total, but long-term. Death resulted from complications of a form of chronic malnutrition. This type of hunger strike was certainly just as "real" as the former case, even though it was not "total". In Turkey, the hunger strikers understood that duration was a key element in elevating their protest actions. This "dichotomy" is no longer considered relevant, as hunger strikers can die in either of the two situations.
