In MH4U, every beast is a “clever girl”. The entire hunt is like a boxing match; you’re both looking for an opening to capitalize on. Some monsters call for backup to gain a numerical advantage. Others may use status ailments to inflict extra damage or to incapacitate. For example, the Gore Magala uses its signature Frenzy virus attacks in tandem with its combo strikes to inflict massive damage. If the player doesn’t resist the Frenzy virus, they lose their recover ability and Frenzy attacks deal much more damage than usual. Some monsters even hide underground and wait to launch an ambush. Like any wounded animal, if the monster is losing the fight, it’ll run away and hide to either consume weaker monsters or rest to replenish its stamina. But if a monster is backed into a corner, it’ll go primal, which makes the beast very unpredictable (doubly so for monsters inflicted by the Frenzy virus).
