• Drums should be segregated in lots according to type of fuel, and subdivided by theirrespective batch numbers.• Horizontally stacked drums shall be nested in pyramid formation for maximum stability,up to 3 rows high with wooden runners between the rows for handling safety. The bungsshall be below the liquid level in the 3 o’clock/9 o’clock position so that any leak is visibleand accessible.• If drums have to be stacked on uneven ground, runners shall also be placed below thebottom row to obtain an even stack and to keep the drums clear of dirt and moisture.• The bottom row of horizontally stacked drums shall be held firmly in position, by wedgeshapedchocks.• Drums shall be unstacked singly. Stacks of drums shall never be broken by removing theouter chocks and allowing free fall to the ground.• Access shall be possible to all sides of stacks to facilitate detection and removal of leakingdrums, and for fire fighting.• Drums stored vertically shall be kept under cover in a suitably ventilated area andshall be stored on wooden “pallet” type surfaces to protect drum ends. Weeklyinspections shall be performed to verify drums are free from leaks, in good condition,seals intact and to confirm drum tops are free from water.
