What are the differences between human rights law, medical ethics and international humanitarian law?Human rights standards are adopted by governments and refer to the rights a person can insist should be respected by states. These are codified in international treaties and conventions and supplemented by guidelines, principles and declarations. A list of the current international standards is given at the web-site of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the site of the University of Minnesota human right library.Medical ethics provides a framework for medical practice and decision-making; it shares some values with human rights but also deals with complex issues not specified in human rights law (such as choosing between two morally difficult choices in patient care). Medical ethics is usually not, in itself, legally binding on the doctor. However, a doctor failing to act in accordance with medical ethics might infringe statutory regulations of medical practice.International humanitarian law was established by international diplomatic treaty and regulates the conduct of parties to a war or internal conflict. It reinforces some human rights principles but equally focuses on the way combatants should conduct a war which is largely not touched on by human rights law. These standards are available at the site of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
