Post-traumatic states, personality and cultureThere are cultural and personal variations in the expression of post-traumatic states. Some have argued that PTSD should not be diagnosed in non-western populations where dissociation and somatisation may be symptoms that are more prominent. There is reason to believe that better diagnostic formulations will be developed in the future. Rather than discussing the diversity of syndromes described in different cultural settings we advise flexibility in the diagnostic approach and looking for underlying dynamics related to previous trauma. The specific culture in a prison may also influence the phenomenology of post-traumatic states.
